- Dr. Max Helman -
The winner of the 2005 Lifetime Achievement Award is Dr. Max Helman. Dr. Helman was born in Long Island, New York. He is a graduate of Northeast Missouri State University and Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Helman and his wife Sharon have five children. He established his practice in Mishawaka in 1967 and is recently joined by his daughter, Dr. Laura Helman. Max was active in the US Army from 1958-1960 in the medical and dental corps.
Dr. Helman has been very active in the state and national Osteopathic organizations. Recently he was the Secretary of the National Osteopathic Foundation. In conjunction with the Residency Program in Mishawaka he is the Past Clinical Assistant Professor of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery in Family Practice of Kirksville College and Assistant Clinical Professor of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery in Family Practice of Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine. Max has been past President of the Northern Indiana Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons. In 1994 he was the Kinsinger Award Plaque Winner, which is the highest award given to a practicing Osteopathic Physician in IN. He has been an AOA delegate from IN since 1981. Dr. Helman has also held numerous positions including President of the American College Of Osteopathic Family Physicians. Dr. Helman currently has privileges with Memorial Hospital of South Bend and St. Joseph Community Hospital. Nursing home affiliations include active staff of all major Extended Care Facilities and Nursing Homes of St. Joseph County.
At this point one might ask how a person could possibly have time to contribute and volunteer in the community. Dr. Helman has done just that and has been active with the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts; the Buchanan Jaycees; a member of Alpha Phi Omega and a Physician volunteer for Community Breast Screenings and Childhood Immunizations.
Dr. Helman also enjoys golf; boating; architectural design and renovation and photography.
